Yemen condemns breaking into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by extremists

ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Yemeni government on Monday strongly condemned the incursion into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem by "extremists" under the protection of Israeli police forces.

In a statement carried by the state-run Saba news agency, the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the storming of the mosque, calling it a "new escalation and a blatant challenge to millions of Muslims across the world."

The statement called upon the international community to take action to prevent further such assaults on the mosque, one of the holiest sites in Islam.

Tensions frequently flare around visits by nationalist and religious Jews to the compound, seen as a provocation by Palestinians.

The Yemeni government renewed its firm stance in support of Palestinian aspirations to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

On Sunday morning, Israeli authorities reportedly clashed with Muslim worshippers at Bab al-Silsila, which is also referred to as the Chain Gate, an entrance that serves as one of the primary access points to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, according to the official Palestinian News Agency.

As per Israeli media, they contend that there were no significant disruptions at the location. They only noted minor altercations between the police and Palestinians as Jewish visitors explored the area.
