AMMAN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's Foreign Ministry on Sunday strongly condemned the break-in by extremists into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem under the protection of the Israeli police.
The ministry said the acts represent a violation of the historical status and legal status quo at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and a desecration of holy places, according to a statement by the ministry.
Ministry's Spokesperson Sanan Al-Majali called on Israel to cease all actions and violations against the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to respect its sanctity.
The Israeli forces attacked Muslim worshippers on Sunday morning at Bab as-Silsila, also known as the Chain Gate, one of the main entrances to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the official Palestinian News Agency reported.
Israeli media said there were no serious disturbances at the site, and only minor scuffles were reported between police and Palestinians as Jewish visitors toured the site.
The Jordanian official warned against the continuation of these violations and emphasized the necessity of respecting that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.
