JERUSALEM, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Israel reported a new daily record of 37,887 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the caseload in the country to 1,576,780, said the Israeli Ministry of Health.
The new daily figure is much higher than the previous record of 21,514 new cases reported on Monday.
The rate of positive results from all daily COVID-19 tests rose to 11.38 percent, the highest in Israel since early October 2020.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 death toll of the country increased by two to 8,271, while the number of patients in serious condition rose from 222 to 247, said the ministry.
The number of active cases also increased to a new record high of 185,753 since the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020, it added.
Israel's COVID-19 reproduction number indicator, also known as the R number, has registered an increase, from 1.95 to 2.05.
When the R number is greater than one, the patient count increases at an exponential rate.
