RAMALLAH, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtaye on Monday condemned the visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog to an Israeli settlement in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.
On Sunday, Herzog visited the Ibrahimi Mosque to light the first candle for the Jewish Feast of Lights, better known as the "Hanukkah."
According to an official statement, Ishtaye told the weekly meeting of the cabinet held in the northern West Bank city of Nablus that the cabinet "condemns Herzog's visit to the Ibrahimi mosque to celebrate the Jewish festival of lights."
"Herzog's visit is a provocation to the feelings of the Palestinian people and a flagrant violation of the sanctity of the Ibrahimi Mosque," Ishtaye said.
Considered by Muslims the fourth holiest site, the Ibrahimi Mosque is the oldest holy building in the West Bank. The place is also considered as a holy site by the Jews.
After signing Oslo Peace Accords between Israel and the Palestinians in 1993, a subsequent agreement on Hebron was signed in 1997, dividing the holy site into two parts, H1 is under Palestinian control and H2 is under Israeli control.
